Water Damage Intrusion Classes (1–4)

Understanding the class of water intrusion helps determine how much damage has occurred — and how difficult it will be to dry and restore. At Purisync Heating and Air, we use these classifications during our inspection and assessment to create accurate estimates and timelines for full restoration.

What Are Water Intrusion Classes?

There are four classes of water damage, based on how much water is absorbed and how hard it is to dry. These classes are used by insurance companies and restoration professionals.

Class 1 – Minimal Intrusion

  • Only a small area is affected
  • Low absorption materials (concrete, tile, hardwood)
  • Little or no carpet, insulation, or porous materials impacted
  • Fastest and simplest to dry

Class 2 – Medium Intrusion

  • Water has affected walls, floors, and structural materials
  • Carpet and cushion may be wet
  • Evaporation load is moderate

Class 3 – Extensive Saturation

  • Ceilings, walls, floors, and subfloors are saturated
  • Often includes carpet, insulation, wood, and drywall
  • Requires aggressive drying and dehumidification

Class 4 – Specialty Drying Needed

  • Water has deeply saturated materials with low permeance
  • Examples: plaster, brick, hardwood, or stone
  • Requires specialized drying methods over longer periods

How We Use Intrusion Classes

During the restoration process, class levels help us decide:

  • What equipment to use
  • How long drying will take
  • How much labor will be required
  • What insurance documentation is needed
