Understanding Water Damage Categories and Classes

Water damage isn’t all the same. At Purisync Heating and Air, we classify water damage by both its contamination level (categories) and the extent of saturation (classes). This helps us design the safest and most effective restoration process for your home or business.

Water Damage Categories

These categories refer to the **type of water involved** and the level of contamination:

Category 1 – Clean Water

Originates from clean sources like burst pipes or water supply lines. While it poses no immediate health risks, damage can worsen quickly if not treated. Learn more about burst pipe water damage.

Category 2 – Gray Water

Contains some contaminants and may cause illness. Sources include washing machines, dishwashers, or toilet overflows (without feces).

Category 3 – Black Water

Highly contaminated and hazardous. Includes sewage backups and floodwaters from outside. Immediate cleanup and disinfection are required. See our sewage cleanup services.

Water Damage Classes

Classes refer to the **extent of water intrusion and evaporation rate**:

Class 1

Minor water intrusion. Affects only part of a room, with low evaporation materials (e.g., tile or concrete).

Class 2

Significant water absorption in carpets, walls, and cushions. Restoration involves moderate drying efforts.

Class 3

Water has saturated walls, ceilings, insulation, and subfloors. Requires aggressive drying methods.

Class 4

Involves specialty materials like hardwood, plaster, or stone. Deeply embedded moisture requires specialty drying equipment.

Why Classification Matters

Each category and class impacts the restoration method, equipment used, and time required. Proper classification also supports insurance claims and documentation. Need help filing a claim? We assist with insurance documentation.
